Take Heed

— After Sita and Sarita, or Young Girl with a Cat by Cecilia Beaux (1893-1894)

Sarita's mind is engaged,
her thoughts secreted away from all
but her companion, Sita.

Her feline watches us, watching them
warily eyeing us, ignoring the calm
Sarita's fingers imbue with each stroke.

Absently they sit
Sita on edge, Sarita calm
fragile precipice of peace.
